Modern retail storefronts face high-frequency physical liabilities, including targeted shoplifting, vendor fraud, and employee safety risks. Digitally, their primary vulnerability is credit card skimming, point-of-sale (POS) terminal hacking, and the theft of customer loyalty databases.

Informed by Hofstad’s background managing retail asset protection for Walgreens Pharmacies, we engineer storefront networks where physical security and digital transactions reinforce one another. We map out camera placements to focus tightly on point-of-sale registers, high-theft inventory aisles, and back-alley delivery doors. Cameras are cross-angled so that if an individual attempts to tamper with or mask one unit, their actions are clearly captured by an adjacent camera.
The physical infrastructure connects back to a secured, locked equipment rack on-site. The local internet installation is routed directly through a hardened WatchGuard hardware appliance, which segments the storefront into strict digital silos:
- The Transaction VLAN: A deeply locked-down network dedicated exclusively to POS terminals and card readers.
- The Surveillance VLAN: Handles high-bitrate video streams, preventing video traffic from bogging down transaction speeds.
- The Guest WiFi VLAN: A completely sandboxed internet hotspot for customers, built with strict boundary controls so users cannot view or ping internal retail machines.
All back-office computers and inventory-tracking tablets are deployed with ESET security software to intercept malicious email attachments or fraudulent web scripts. To provide 24-hour operational continuity, our support desk relies on enterprise-licensed TeamViewer deployments. If a cashier reports an interface issue or a security manager needs to review surveillance logs after hours, our team can securely bridge into the authorized system remotely, adjusting parameters instantly to keep the storefront secure and operational.
