The Infrastructure Challenge
Marine terminals operate under punishing environmental conditions, including salt fog, extreme vibration, heavy wind, and freezing winter temperatures. The network must span miles of open asphalt yards where massive gantry cranes load shipping containers onto ships, trains, and semi-trucks.
Every single container movement must be logged in real time via terminal operating software. This demanding workflow requires an incredibly rugged network capable of linking mobile crane computers, automated entry gates, and perimeter security sensors over vast distances without suffering from weather-related dropouts.
The Emerald City IT Architecture
Emerald City IT engineers port networks using a hybrid infrastructure consisting of outdoor-rated tactical fiber optics and point-to-multipoint wireless bridges. Our certified technicians deploy marine-grade, corrugation-resistant fiber cabling underground to link cranes, terminal offices, and outer security checkpoints.
For the open container yard where trenching cables is impossible, we install high-power wireless mesh bridges enclosed in weatherproof, IP67-rated enclosures. These systems are designed to withstand salt-water corrosion and high-velocity PNW winds.
We isolate the port’s data streams into dedicated, highly secure network zones to protect critical operations:
  • The Telemetry VLAN: Manages real-time weight, position, and tracking data from gantry cranes and yard hostlers.
  • The Logistics VLAN: Handles custom container manifestation and automated gate processing databases.
  • The Security VLAN: Channels high-definition thermal and optical surveillance feeds from the port's perimeter boundaries.
Network perimeter defense is managed by enterprise-tier WatchGuard hardware appliances configured to comply with maritime security standards. Every terminal endpoint, workstation, and crane computer is hardened with ESET Endpoint Protection to neutralize incoming ransomware or malware attacks.
Because cargo ships load and unload around the clock, our 24-hour support desk monitors the entire network fabric using secure TeamViewer connectivity. This allows our engineers to instantly run remote diagnostic sweeps on wireless bridges, adjust firewall traffic shaping rules, or resolve crane communication errors on the fly, keeping international trade moving smoothly.
